Where Kevin Works: Pennsylvania
Kevin Washo advises corporate and nonprofit clients on strategic engagement with the political and legislative process at the federal and state level. He also acts as a liaison to key government stakeholders to assist clients with government relations across Pennsylvania as well as in Washington, D.C., and New York. Through various previous leadership positions in state and national government and politics, Kevin has developed extensive experience navigating the political landscape and interfacing with city, state and federal officials.
Most recently, Kevin served as executive director of the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention (DNC), overseeing all aspects of the Host Committee, including its operation, fundraising, community outreach and strategic partnerships. He assumed this role after coordinating and executing Philadelphia’s successful bid to host the DNC. As the executive director, he was the lead liaison with the DNC Committee and ran a team that raised and operated an $80 million budget. He also built a coalition of the civic and corporate leaders of Philadelphia and oversaw their relationship to the 2016 Host Committee, a key element in helping realize the DNC’s success in the city.
He previously served as vice president of New Partners Consulting, a Washington, D.C.-based political affairs firm, where he implemented a growth strategy for the firm’s Philadelphia office and advised a wide variety of clients on government affairs issues. Prior, he served as executive director of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party — from 2010 to 2013 — during which time the party quadrupled in size and became one of the largest, most effective Democratic operations in the country. He steered the party to historic gains in the 2012 election, helping to secure victories for President Obama, Senator Casey, and all three row offices in Pennsylvania for the first time in state history. In addition to managing and overseeing the offices, staff members and budgetary concerns comprising Pennsylvania’s democratic operation, Kevin directed the state party relationship with a variety of Pennsylvania and national political entities and interest groups. He also was selected as one of six executive directors across the country to serve on the executive committee of the Association of Democratic Chairs representing the biggest industrial states.
Kevin’s federal experience includes serving in the Obama administration as the White House Liaison to the Department of Agriculture (USDA). As one of a dozen members of Secretary Vilsack’s Senior Staff, he acted as the main point of contact between the USDA and the White House and identified, hired and managed 235 presidential appointees as well as acted as the primary contact for the Office of White House Personnel to identify and vet candidates for Presidential appointments requiring Senate confirmation.
Earlier in his career, he was a senior aide to Senator Bob Casey, advising Senator Casey on federal and state issues, policies and legislation. Kevin was also then-Senator Barack Obama’s Pennsylvania political director during the 2008 presidential election, responsible for all in-state politics on behalf of the candidate and the Obama for America Campaign.
Governor Tom Wolf appointed Kevin to the board of trustees of his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, in 2015, and the Pennsylvania Senate confirmed him to the position in 2016.
Kevin is a native of Scranton, Pa., and currently resides in Philadelphia.
