FDNY Commissioner to Resign

Laura Kavanagh, Commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, announced on Saturday that she would be resigning from her role. Kavanagh has been in the role since October 2022, and she was the first woman to oversee the agency in its history and the youngest in over 100 years. She did not give an explanation for her departure, but stated that she would stay in the role for several months to assist in the transition while Mayor Adams selects a new Commissioner.

Grants to Support Youth Team Sports

Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul announced that $4.2M in state grants will be available to provide youth team sports programming, sports education, and athletic equipment upgrades throughout the City. $1.9M will be allocated to 41 community-based organizations this summer, with a focus on funding historically underserved neighborhoods. The funding comes through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, and was allocated in this year’s state budget.

2025 NYC Mayoral Primary

Fundraising has begun for the 2025 mayoral primary, with two Democrats currently running against incumbent Eric Adams. Scott Stringer, former NYC Comptroller, and Zellnor Myrie, a Brooklyn State Senator, have declared their candidacies, with speculation that current NYC Comptroller Brad Lander and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo will join as well. Stringer’s campaign has raised $424K and Myrie’s has raised $326K. Adams’ campaign outpaces both of them at $2.5M, including $1M in the last six months.
