Yesterday, New Yorkers voted on one seat in the U.S. Senate, all 26 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and all 213 seats of the state legislature, in addition to the presidential ticket, which is being widely reported in the press. Below we have summarized the results of these New York races and on Monday, November 11th at 10:30am, the Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies New York team will host a webinar to discuss the 2024 election results and their impact on New York. Results listed below indicate current numbers, which are not yet finalized by the Board of Elections.
Although the U.S. House of Representatives majority is still undecided, Democrats successfully flipped two House seats in New York, electing both John Mannion and Josh Riley to replace Republican incumbents Brandon Williams and Marc Molinaro. Other New York Republicans in Long Island and the Hudson Valley were able to hold onto their seats, though one race is still too close to call.
Voters in New York State approved Proposition 1, the Equal Rights Amendment. Prop. 1 will change the state constitution to expand the list of protected classes of people, explicitly prohibiting discrimination based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes. State law currently prohibits discrimination based on race or religion. Proposition 2 through 5 – recommended by the Charter Revision Commission established by Mayor Adams – passed, granting expanded powers to the New York City Mayor. Proposition 6 appears to be rejected by a narrow margin, although votes are not yet finalized.
Although some state races are still too close to call, Democrats will hold onto their majorities in both chambers in the state legislature. However, Brooklyn Democratic Senator Iwen Chu conceded her race to Steve Chan last evening. An open race to represent the Syracuse area between Democrat Chris Ryan and Republican Nick Paro is in the margin of error and may result in a recount. Democratic incumbents in competitive Assembly districts in the Mohawk Valley, Queens, and the Hudson Valley were reelected.
