NYC Council Passes Resolution Calling on the Mayor to Restore Education Department Budget Cuts

This morning, the NYC Council convened a stated meeting, where they passed a resolution calling for the Mayor to reverse the cuts to the New York City Department of Education (DOE). The resolution calls for the Mayor and DOE Chancellor to immediately reverse the DOE’s reductions to school budgets in the FY23 Adopted Budget and fully restore the $469 million removed from school budgets by DOE. It also calls on the Chancellor to submit updated budgets to the Panel for Educational Policy reflecting the restoration. Further, the Council wants the DOE to provide an accounting of unspent federal stimulus funds, and calls on the Mayor to utilize any unspent and unallocated federal stimulus to restore the DOE’s budget. The resolution is nonbinding, but reflects the Council’s desire to fully restore the DOE’s budget cuts. You can find read the full resolution here.

New York’s Concealed Carry Laws Go Into Effect

Last Thursday, New York State’s new concealed carry laws went into effect. The State laws, which were passed in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down New York’s century-old concealed carry law, will require concealed carry license applicants to meet revised eligibility requirements and complete a state-regulated firearms training course. Further, the laws also define “sensitive locations” where concealed carry licensees are not permitted to carry guns within. NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced that the City is launching an outreach plan to educate New Yorkers about the new gun laws. In addition, Mayor Adams, Comptroller Lander, and several pension trustees called on American Express, MasterCard and Visa to improve tracking of gun sales.
