NYC Submits Bid to Host 2024 Democratic National ConventionLast week, New York City formally submitted its bid to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). Mayor Eric Adams was joined by NYC city, state, and federal elected officials at a press conference to announce the launch of the city’s bid to host the 2024 convention. The bid proposes Madison Square Garden as the primary event site, with the Javits Center available to host additional events. In addition, the proposal highlights that over 45,000 hotel rooms are available within a one mile radius of the event sites, as well as numerous major cultural institutions and national landmarks. In the press conference, the Mayor highlighted how hosting the convention would provide a major boon to the city’s economy, where it is estimated that more than 30,000 people will travel for the event. Leading City Hall’s effort are Chief of Staff Frank Carone and Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer. The last time the city hosted the DNC was in 1992, where Bill Clinton was nominated as the Democratic candidate for President. NYC Council Introduces LegislationLast Thursday, the NYC Council convened a stated meeting, where they introduced multiple pieces of legislation. The Council introduced a bill that would require the NYC Department of City Planning to assign a unique identifying number to each zoning lot in the City. They also introduced a bill which would require the Department of Buildings to establish a pilot program for the use of drones in the inspection of the exterior walls of buildings greater than six stories in height. In addition, the Council introduced legislation which would require that a tenant be promptly notified if a mold assessor determines that mold remediation is necessary in the tenant’s apartment unit. You can find all of the bills that were passed and introduced here. Antonio Delgado Sworn in as Lieutenant GovernorLast Wednesday, Antonio Delgado was officially sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of New York. Delgado was appointed by Governor Kathy Hochul earlier this month and took the oath of office on Wednesday for his new role, becoming the first person of Latino heritage to serve in statewide office in New York. Delgado has served in Congress since 2019, representing New York’s 19th Congressional District which encompasses parts of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, and was the first person of color to represent upstate New York in Congress. Although he was sworn in last week, he faces a competitive three-way primary on June 28 for the Democratic nomination of Lieutenant Governor. Delgado will be running against former New York City Council Member Diana Reyna and nonprofit executive and activist Ana Maria Archila. |
