REFERENDUMS

This election, Illinois had three advisory referendums on the ballot due to Senate Bill 2412 that put these questions on the ballot this November. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Jay Hoffman and Senate President Harmon which passed the two chambers this past spring . These are advisory questions and do not have the power to enact new laws in Illinois. Below are the results of these non-binding referendums:

  • Illinois voters were asked whether candidates interfering with or attempting to interfere with an election worker’s duties should be subject to civil penalties. 89% of Illinois voters responded yes to this question.
  • Illinois voters were asked whether individuals earning over $1 million dollars should have an additional 3% tax for the purpose of dedicating funds raised to property tax relief. Most Illinois voted in support of this measure with 60% voting in favor and 40% opposed. The Department of Revenue found that a 3% millionaire’s tax could generate $4.5 billion for the state.
  • Illinois voters were asked whether all health insurance plans that provide coverage for pregnancy benefits should provide coverage for medically appropriate assisted reproductive treatments including in vitro fertilization. A majority of Illinoisians voted in support of this measure with 72% voting in favor and 28% opposed.
