NY Senate Democrats Appoint Sen. Shelley Mayer as Chair

The New York State Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has appointed Yonkers representative Senator Shelley Mayor to chair their campaign finance committee, a prominent role as Mayer will lead the committee’s fundraising efforts as Senate Democrats prepare for upcoming election cycles. Her appointment comes as Senator Michael Gianaris, who has served as DSCC chair since 2010, prepares to depart from the Senate at the end of his term after announcing he will not seek reelection.

Mayor Mamdani Appoints NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board Chair and Panel for Education Policy Members

Mayor Mamdani this week appointed Jennifer Jones Austin as chair of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) and 13 members to the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP). Jones Austin’s appointment marks a return to New York City politics for her, as she advised on the City’s universal pre-K initiative and NYPD reforms during the De Blasio administration. Jones Austin currently serves as Vice Chair of the National Action Network Board and has held leadership roles on numerous non-profit boards, such as Harvard University’s Center for Law. The 13 members appointed to PEP are a mix of returning and newly appointed members. The panel appointments came in advance of its inaugural meeting of 2026-27 on Wednesday, July 29^th, where they discussed topics such as the integration of artificial intelligence into schools being discussed.

Mayor Mamdani Announces New Savings Targets for City Agencies

Mayor Mamdani this week directed City agencies to find an additional 2.5% in savings for Fiscal Years 2027 and 2028. The order will begin with a “Workforce Savings and Efficiency Survey” that will allow employees to recommend areas to cut waste. The recommendations will then be reviewed by each agency’s Chief Savings Officer, who will incorporate the suggestions into the November Plan. The directive comes after Mamdani previously instructed City agencies to find 1.5% savings in fiscal year 2026 and 2.5% in fiscal year 2027. The move has been met with praise from City figures like Comptroller Levine and City Council Speaker Menin, who applauded the Mayor for committing to finding savings so early in the budget cycle. The City currently has a $6.4 billion budget gap for Fiscal Year 2027.

NYS Small Business Development Centers Impact Report

Governor Hochul this week announced the 2025 Impact Report from the New York Small Business Development Centers (NYSBDC). Managed by the State University of New York, the centers offer no-cost business advice, training, and research to entrepreneurs in the state. In the past year  NYSBDC served 27,414 businesses, helped generate $218.8 million in new capital, supported the saving and retention of 31,282 jobs, and helped create 3,392 new jobs. Over its 40-year existence, NYSBDC have now served more than 555,000 entrepreneurs, helping generate nearly $9 billion in total for New York State. The centers are primarily funded by New York State and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
