The NYPD will create a 450-member Domestic Violence Investigation Unit, described as the largest of its kind in the United States. Squads will be assigned to all 77 precincts, and officers will receive trauma-focused training expanded from one day to two days annually. Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the change is the department’s first major overhaul of domestic violence investigations in about 30 years and is intended to reduce repeated retellings by survivors and improve case continuity. Domestic violence makes up roughly 40% of the 23,397 felony assaults recorded through October 12 this year in New York City.
Last Thursday, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa participated in the first fall debate. Mamdani was pressed on proposals including fare-free buses and rent regulations, as well as past comments about the police, apologizing again to the NYPD. Cuomo questioned the feasibility of Mamdani’s agenda and addressed questions about his own record, including sexual misconduct allegations and nursing home policy decisions during his tenure as governor. Sliwa positioned himself as an outsider and criticized both opponents. The candidates also discussed mayoral control of schools, relations with the federal government, policing approaches, and potential tax increases on high-income residents, which would require state approval.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center announced plans to build a 481-foot-tall, state-of-the-art inpatient pavilion on a 25,000-square-foot foundation, connected to its existing hospital by a skybridge. Targeted to open in 2030, the roughly $2.3 billion Kenneth C. Griffin Pavilion would add 208 beds to address rising cancer demand, with all rooms designed for natural light, patient control of the environment, and family accommodations. The project emphasizes adaptable, modular care spaces, expanded capacity for robotic surgery, and energy-efficient systems such as triple-glazed glass, with a Certificate of Need review expected later this year and excavation planned through 2027.
