Treasurer Garrity Holds Mar-a-Lago Fundraiser

Republican gubernatorial candidate and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity hosted a fundraiser at the Mar-a-Lago Club, where she received an endorsement from President Donald Trump. During the event, President Trump criticized incumbent Governor Josh Shapiro while Garrity’s campaign highlighted Pennsylvania’s economic and educational rankings as evidence of “failed results” under the current administration. Treasurer Garrity, who reported $1.5 million in contributions last quarter, is working to narrow the gap with the $30 million campaign fund held by Governor Shapiro. The Pennsylvania Democratic Party responded by linking Treasurer Garrity’s platform to federal policies they claim are contributing to higher prices for Pennsylvania families.

NFL Draft Construction

Construction for the 2026 NFL Draft is officially underway, with crews beginning work on the 50,000-square-foot Draft Theater in the parking lots surrounding Acrisure Stadium. The project marks the start of a massive transformation for the North Shore and Point State Park, which will host the Draft Experience fan festival. Local officials expect the event to be the largest in Pittsburgh’s history, drawing an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 visitors between April 23 and 25. The city has initiated road closures and displaced approximately 4,000 parking spaces, while Pittsburgh Public Schools and Point Park University have announced shifts to remote learning during the draft weekend. Pittsburgh Regional Transit is planning expanded service, with free rides on the “T” and the Monongahela Incline for attendees.

FBI Director Patel and Senator McCormick Host Fentanyl Roundtable

U.S. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel convened prosecutors, law enforcement officials, and families who have lost loved ones to drugs to address the fentanyl crisis and coordinate multi-agency enforcement. While Pennsylvania opioid overdose deaths dropped to 1,400 last year, a 60% decrease from pandemic-era averages, officials emphasized that the volume of seized narcotics remains high. Senator McCormick highlighted recent legislative efforts like the Halt Fentanyl Act, Nitazene Control Act, and the Joint Task Force to Counter Illicit Synthetic Narcotics Act of 2025, while local leaders, including Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk, noted the importance of maintaining a social safety net for addiction treatment.

Senator McCormick and NIH Director Tour Penn Medicine

U.S. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya toured the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine to highlight the impact of federal research funding. The visit comes as the agency faces significant instability, with recent data showing the NIH issued 66% fewer grant awards through February 2026 compared to previous years, leading to project delays in labs nationwide. While the White House has disputed reports of a proposed 20% budget reduction for 2027, Senator McCormick vowed to oppose any further cuts, calling the agency a “real driver of innovation” that generates over $5 billion in annual economic activity for the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania currently ranks as the fourth-largest recipient of NIH funding in the nation, supporting more than 21,000 research jobs across the state.
